Okay, think back to a time when smartphones weren’t a thing. If you’re too young to have experienced that… well, staying awake without a distraction like a phone is extremely hard. Especially when it’s like, 2:00 in the morning. Now, add the element of being phased to that boringness, and tie my tails in a knot, you can’t even twiddle your thumbs for entertainment.

That was my existence that night. And the next. And the one after that. By the end of the third night, I’d come to two conclusions. First, falling asleep in the middle of teaching a class is apparently hilarious, and students are little devils who will take advantage of every free moment they can get. Second, the Japanese Ghost was not a student of our school.

“The shoplifting is still going on!” I said quicker than a cartoon chipmunk could have.

We were in Oberon’s classroom, thirty minutes before school was supposed to start.

Oberon narrowed his eyes at me. “How many cups of coffee have you had this morning?”

I scratched my head in irritation, messing up the right side entirely. “That simply does not matter. Oberon, are you listening to me? This blasted ghost is not a student at our school! I’ve kept a watch out every evening and have seen no kitsune enter or exit. And believe me, I would have even seen the purple eyes of one who was phasing in or out of that door.”

Oberon stroked at the scruff on his chin. “Interesting. I wonder…”

I stared at him, waiting for him to finish his thought.

Again, irritated, I said, “You wonder what?”

His eyes focused on me. “I know of at least one kitsune who has left the Dome the past three evenings.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. The accusation in his words boiled my blood. If there was any form of electricity for me to harness, I would have channeled it and sent it straight at him.

“You think I am the Japanese Ghost?” I said, incredulous.

He looked away, throwing his hands in the air. “I’m merely stating a fact.” He brought his eyes back to me. “You’re not, though, are you?”

“No!” I yelled. At this point, I didn’t even care if anybody heard me out in the hallway. “I’m not the blooming Japanese Ghost!”

“I wouldn’t think so,” Oberon said. “Is there any chance at all we might be dealing with a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde type issue?”

“What?” I shouted, hardly believing where this conversation was going.

Oberon pressed his lips together tightly, probably looking for the right words to use. “What I’m saying is, is there a possibility that you are the Japanese Ghost, but just don’t know it? Perhaps in an unconscious state, an alternate you comes out and… does bad things.”

I bit the inside of my lip until I tasted blood. Boy, I really needed some real sleep.

“Are you actually asking this?” I growled. “I mean, you’re not just pulling my tails, right?”

“Stranger things have happened in the shifter world,” he said. “I just want to know if it is possible.
